Operation Linebacker 1- This was an operation led by the United States Air Force and backed by the South Vietnamese Air Force. Lasted from May 9,1972 to October 23, 1972 and was launched to keep the South Vietnamese from giving up land to the North Vietnamese. They bombed the North Vietnamese and pushed them back so that they couldn't get fresh supplies into their camps. It was very effective and little to no supplies made it into the North Vietnamese camps.
Battle of Hamburger Hill- A very deadly battle that lasted eleven days in 1969. The U.S. and South Vietnamese planned an attack to push the North Vietnamese out of the A Shau Valley. The battle was always filled with machine gun fire and sniper fire that they compared it to being in a hamburger grinder. There were an estimated seventy American deaths with 370 injuries. The Northern Vietnamese lost more than 600 soldiers. The U.S. actually had friendly fire with napalm and accidental gun fire.
Tet Offensive- This was a series of suprise attacks on the U.S. and South Vietnam. This helped change the tide of the war in their favor. They North Vietnam wanted to win the war before their communist leader died. When the attacks began they took over South Vietnam cities and outposts. However the U.S. later took all of the land back and pushed the North Vietnamese out of those cities. This failed but gave the Vietcong hope that they could take over land again and hope to take hold of it. This made the Americans buckle down and work harder to win the war.
Battle of Hue- This battle was very chaotic and one of the hottest spots for combat in Vietnam. Before the war it was the capital of Vietnam. This changed when the North Vietnamese became a Communist nation and split Vietnam into two places. The NVA launched an attack on Hue and started using mortars to clear out the nearby battalions of the South Vietnamese and the U.S. Army. The Marines did most of the fighting and fought wonderfully and proudly. They pushed them out of the city. The next day they went out and searched the houses and building of Hue to find any remaining Vietcong and NVA. There were some held up in a school and the Marines pushed them out. Not long after they were taking fire from a church and worked on returning fire. This continued to happen for months until they finally took the city. However there wasn't much of a city to take back because the city was in ruins due to heavy fighting.
