SDS was an American student organization that flourished in late 1960s. The SDS was known for their activism against the Vietnam War. The SDS was founded in 1959 and ended in 1975.

Robert Alan Haber was elected the first president of the SDS. Haber was also an American activist. He was elected at the first meeting of SDS in 1960. His father was William Haber he was an economist and a former dean and professor at the University of Michigan. He was an "energetic" supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.
