Inner cities of the 1950s were in terrible shape. Most people were going to the Urban housing. the biggest populations in the inner cities were African-Americans and Hispanics. Not only were the people leaving but department stores and local businesses headed towards the suburbs to make more money to support their businesses. Another reason was that more highways were needed for travel and they were built by the suburbs which made the suburbs easier to access than the inner cities. Mostly poor people lived in the inner cities because the cost of living was so much lower compared to a suburb. Even though there was very little to be happy about the communities inside of the inner cities were very close. They would help each other with any problems that their neighbors had. Harlem is one of the most well known inner cities because the people of Harlem were always proud of their community no matter what their materialistic properties were. This mad them a proud and amazing society.
