In September of 1949, the Soviet Union had a successful detonation of an atomic device, which was not good news for the U.S. There was a clear arms race happening during the Cold War, and now the U.S. was losing. In response to this successful test, the U.S. amped up its weapons program to try and get ahead, and get ahead they did. They developed a new atomic weapon, a thermonuclear bomb named the Hydrogen Bomb. The Bomb was supposed to be 1,000 times more powerful than the current nuclear weapons available. On November 1st, 1952, the U.S. had a successful test of the Hydrogen bomb. Even the people responsible for making the first atomic bomb were against the development of this weapon, saying that it would only drive the arms race further and faster. They were proven right by the 1970's, as seven nations had now constructed hydrogen bombs.
