Harry S. Truman was the first president to address the National Association for the Advancement of colored People (NAACP) in 1947. He pledged his support for upholding the civil rights of all Americans. IN 1948, he issued and Executive Order for the desegregation of the armed forces and some believe that it was the beginning of the Civil Rights movement.
